Stephen Strasburg has lived up to all the hype. Arguably the top rated pitching prospect of his generation, Strasburg has been the best pitcher for the Washington Nationals during spring training. However, despite his fine pitching, the Nationals have decided to send the number one overall pick in the 2009 draft to the minor leagues.

Why would the Nationals make such a move? The two main reasons: safety and money. The baseball landscape is littered with players who were rushed too fast into action, so letting Strasburg start at double-A makes some sense. As for cents, the Nationals will save a lot of money in the long-term if they wait until May to bring Strasburg up to the major leagues.

In 12 innings this spring, Strasburg allowed one walk, eight hits and had an ERA of 2.00. Most impressively, he struck out 12 batters with a variety of overpowering fastballs and knee-buckling breaking balls.

Although Strasburg may not agree with the decision, he is taking it in stride.

Said Strasburg: “If they tell me what to do, I’m going to do it. Sometimes it won’t make sense, but more times than not, it’s going to work out in the long run. I trust what they’re doing with me.”
