Kelvim Escobar has been signed by the New York Mets to add another experienced arm to the bullpen. Although his recent history suggests he’s a starting pitcher, Escobar will undoubtedly be moving to a reliever role due to health issues.

In 2007, Escobar had a great season — finishing with an 18-7 record and a 3.40 ERA for the Los Angeles Angels. But injuries forced Escobar to miss all but one game in 2008 and 2009. In his sole start last season, the native of Venezuela picked up the loss as he gave up two earned runs in five innings.

The move to the bullpen won’t be totally new for Escobar. While with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2002, Escobar had 38 saves. For his career, the 33-year-old has a record of 101-91 to go along with 59 saves, two holds and an ERA of 4.15.

With Escobar’s fragile health, the Mets were able to ink him to a deal worth .25 million over one season. He could earn more money if he reaches incentives — most of which are based on health.
