If the Red Sox’s true goal was to keep Damon from going to the Rays, or the Yankees, than they were successful even without getting Damon. ESPNBoston.com reported that according to a Red Sox source they "made the waiver claim because they genuinely wanted Damon to join the club for the final month and a half of the season, not to block him from going to another team.”
