Darren Oliver has played for the Texas Rangers in two different tours of duty. Reports have surfaced that Oliver and the Rangers are close to making it a third. The 39-year-old free agent played with the Rangers from 1993-1998 and from 2000-2001.
Despite his advanced age, Oliver is coming off two of the best years of his career — both with the rival Los Angeles Angels. In 2008, he had a record of 7-1 and a 2.88 ERA in 54 appearances. In 2009, he was 5-1 with a 2.71 ERA in 63 appearances.
While Oliver was a starter in his previous two stints with the Rangers, he has only started one game in the last five years. If he ends up signing with the Rangers, he’ll likely be the team’s go-to left-handed setup man. In the last two years, he has 32 holds and only three blown saves.
Reports indicate that Oliver’s contract would be for one season. A dollar amount hasn’t been leaked, however it is expected that Oliver would command around million.
