Latest Baseball News:Cliff Lee Has Tumultuous Spring Training

When the Seattle Mariners traded for Cliff Lee during the offseason, they made one of the biggest splashes of the winter. Lee is a former Cy Young Award winner who is regarded as one of the top dozen pitchers in all of baseball. However, his first spring training with the Mariners has been an eventful one — and not in a positive manner.
First Lee needed foot surgery to address a bone spur. Then, during an exhibition game, he got ejected for throwing at a batter. His actions got him suspended for the first five games of the regular season.
The latest turn for Lee is a strain to his lower right side of his abdomin. While team doctors don’t think it is a significant setback, he will miss at least a week of action.
In 2008, Lee won his Cy Young Award by going 22-3 with a 2.54 ERA as a member of the Cleveland Indians. He began 2009 with the Indians but was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. With the Phillies, his fantastic pitching helped lead the organization back to the World Series for the second straight year.
If Lee can stay healthy (and keep from getting suspended), he’ll be a key cog to the Mariners’ playoff hopes.
