The Washington Nationals have made a number of notable moves this summer, however they were still missing a closer. That hole was filled this week when the Nationals signed Matt Capps to be the team’s closer. Capps is a 26-year-old who has 67 career saves to go along with a 3.61 ERA.
Last year, Capps had a season to forget. In 57 games, he had a 5.80 ERA and five blown saves in 32 opportunities. Considering that he had a 2.28 ERA in 2007 and a 3.02 ERA in 2008, his 2009 baseball had to be considered a massive disappointment.
The Nationals apparently think Capps will bounce back, as the team signed him to a one-year, .5 million deal. A number of other teams were offering similar money, including the New York Mets and Chicago Cubs, but Capps liked Washington’s offer since he’d be able to be a closer.
Mike MacDougal led the Nationals in saves last year but he remains a free agent.
