The San Diego Padres have a new general manager. According to ESPN.com, Jed Hoyer is their new GM. Hoyer comes over from the Boston Red Sox where he held various titles including senior vice president and assistant GM.
Hoyer, who is only 35-year-old, replaces Kevin Towers — who was fired at the end of the regular season. Towers had a good amount of success in his 14 years with the Padres including four division titles.
Although Hoyer is regarded highly by various baseball experts, he’s sure to suffer culture shock going from the endless pockets in Boston to the tight purse in San Diego. It’s expected that the Padres will have less than million to spend on players in the 2010 baseball season.
The Padres have a few good pieces but they are probably about two years away from being legit contenders. We’ll see if Hoyer is up to the job and if he can bring some Red Sox mojo to the west coast.
