Alex Rodriguez had a fairy tale ending to his tumultuous 2009 campaign. Prior to the beginning of the season, Rodriguez admitted to using steroids in the past. He then had hip surgery that forced him to miss the start of the season. However, when all was said and done, Rodriguez and the New York Yankees were World Series champions and Rodriguez was the postseason MVP.
On Saturday night, Rodriguez received the Babe Ruth Award that is given to the MVP of the postseason. In 15 playoff games, Rodriguez had six homers and 18 RBIs while hitting .365. His success was somewhat surprising considering that his last four postseasons saw him hit only .136.
During his acceptance speech, Rodriguez shed tears and was clearly emotional about the award.
Said Rodriguez: “I’ve been to these dinners a couple of times to receive MVP awards and those, I’m very proud of those accomplishments. But none of those accomplishments will ever compare to the feeling you get from being part of a team that won a world championship.”
In the regular season, the three-time American League MVP hit .286 with 30 homers, 100 RBIs and 78 runs.
