The New York Mets have spent most of the offseason looking for a starting catcher. They have finally found their man. Rod Barajas, who spent the last two seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, has agreed to a contract that will pay him million next season.

The 34-year-old hit .226 last season with 19 homers, 71 RBIs and 43 runs. For his career, which began in 1999 with the Arizona Diamondbacks, he’s hitting .238 with 92 homers and 355 RBIs in 813 games.

Scouts say that Barajas is a good power hitter but is in average in most every other area of the game. However, due to his experience and his ability to add a bit of pop to the lineup, the Mets are likely to begin the season with Barajas as their starting catcher.

If Barajas struggles, New York has many other options including Henry Blanco and Omir Santos. In the minor leagues, catcher Josh Thole has some promise.
