Joe Mauer and the Minnesota Twins recently agreed on a contract that will pay the young superstar catcher 4 million over the next eight seasons. At first glance, this may appear to be another case of a baseball team overpaying one of its players. However, that is not the case at all.

Mauer staying with the Twins is good for baseball. In fact, if Mauer would have left Minnesota for a bigger market — like say New York or Boston — that could have done irreparable damage to the sport. Small market teams may have given up hope of ever being able to compete on an equal playing field.

Thankfully, Mauer decided to stay home. The Minnesota native can keep playing for the team he grew up rooting for and all will remain right in the baseball universe — for now, at least.

If you don’t think Mauer was worth the money to the Twins, you must have not been paying attention last season. The 26-year-old won the American League MVP Award, a Gold Glove for his work behind the plate and his third AL batting title. Paying million per season is a small price to keep the local hero, biggest draw and arguably the best player in the league.
