Edinson Volquez, a starting pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds, has been suspended for 50 games after testing positive for a performance enhancing drug. After being handed the suspension, Volquez decided to place the blame on his wife by saying the drug he took that got him suspended was a fertility drug that he used in hopes of starting a family.
Said Volquez: “I was not trying in any way to gain an advantage in my baseball career. I am embarrassed by this whole situation and apologize to my family, friends, fans, teammates, and the entire Reds organization for being a distraction and for causing them any difficulty.”
The native of the Dominican Republic was an All-Star in 2008 and is considered a potential star in the making. The odd part about his suspension is that Volquez is injured and was already planning on missing the next 50 games as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. So, when it comes down to it, Volquez won’t miss any addition games due to this 50-game suspension.
Scheduled to make 5K this season, Volquez is expected to lose about one-third of his salary because of the suspension. The Reds expect for their young hurler to be back on the mound in late July.
